Location: San Diego Ca.

I am married (28 years) and the father of 4 (3 girls ages 14/21/23 and 1 boy age 19). Originally from upstate NY (Rochester area). I was stationed in San Diego in 1985 and have lived here ever since. In 1996 I started a small woodworking hobby/business while still on active duty in the military (Navy). I didn't have a lot of woodworking skills at the time but a good friend of mine is a professional cabinet maker and I was able to partner with him. I worked closely with him for 3 years. During this time we were able to find a customer base through word of mouth advertising. I gained extensive training through the production of over 25 Entertainment Centers, 2 complete kitchens, several fire place mantles and assorted other projects. Our partnership dissolved in 1999 but our friendship continued. My old partner remains a mentor to me still to this day. Over the years we have teamed up on a couple big projects including a 3rd complete kitchen and an 8’ X 8’ cherry entertainment center with a built in fireplace.
In between cabinet builds I started building Shadowboxes for retiring military personnel. This soon became a very successful endeavor. I worked in very senior Commands that had a lot of retiree’s throughout the year. Again word of mouth was my only form of advertisement but it kept me as busy as I wanted to be. My wife joined me on the Shadowbox side of the business. I do all the woodwork and she installs all of the medals, ribbons, warfare devices and other accoutrements people want inside the display. I retired from the Navy a Senior Chief in 2002 but connections established over the years with a few businesses around town continue to provide customer orders. Over the last 18 years my wife and I have delivered over 1000 shadowboxes in all shapes and sizes.
I enjoy woodworking but in 2010 I decided I wanted to learn some new skills and branch out a little. I invested in some new tools, received some training and expanded my product line to custom made pens. The idea was originally intended to just be able to make some unique handmade gifts for family members. This quickly changed. I gave several pens away as gifts and when people saw them I started getting orders. Within the first year I sold enough to pay for all of the equipment and supplies purchased to support the new product line.
In 2013 I purchased two major upgrades for my shop. The first was the Industrial version of the SawStop. This was a major upgrade over my old Delta Contractor saw. Not only is this new saw bigger and stronger but also much safer. The second upgrade purchased later in the year was a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) desktop machine from ShopBot. Although this machine has required a lot of time to learn how to use, it was time well spent. The tutorials included with the software are excellent and the customer support received from ShopBot and Vectric have been outstanding. I really enjoy the new capabilities this machine provides.
I don't limit my woodworking endeavors all to the business aspect. I have partnered with a local High School drama department as a volunteer to help teach their tech theater class how to build props for their plays. This has been a lot of fun and very rewarding.
Command Performance Wood Designs is not my primary job but rather a self-sustaining hobby business that provides enough profit to support what I enjoy doing.

Hello Tim, Welcome to LJs. Checking my email account I’ve noticed that I have some more folks adding me to their buddy list. As you can tell I haven’t logged on in quite some time, I’ve been busy building places to shop for goods or services by my fellow Americans. And being a fellow American I would like to thank you for your military service and sacrifice to country.
