no previous part Part 1 of From cut-offs to.... series Part 2: A day of planes, handplanes that is »

Ok, everyone has a bin for cut-offs and other scraps….never really find a use for them, right?

From the Bed Frame Project…I was left with a lot of little pieces,,,and a bunch of shavings…most went out to the burn pit, to smoke away the skeeters…..I was left with these three things, way too big to burn..

2×10 x 18” and one a tad longer. Was big enough, I had to clean the bench completely off…

Amazing how fast a tool well fills up…I even stashed all the tools away, except what was needed..even the chisels were all stashed away..

Hmmm, note to self: add a second row to stash these in….
The longer of the three planks was marked up, and run through the bandsaw…

To get four leg blanks. That thing in the middle has other plans….
Wasn’t going to taper the legs, this time around, had another idea to try out….involved a curve..

First of four cuts…..marked a line 1” in from an edge, ran it along until a French Curve template could be used..
Then another cut to match. There was also the same cuts on a second face…

Goal was to have that 1” square turn to the outside. Two faces made something like this…

Face 1. and ..

Face 2…..makes a corner towards the outside like this..

I kept the cut-off from the first cut, to use as a pattern….the fun was about to begin..

Rinse and repeat …had to recheck while doing the fourth one, to make sure the cure was going the right direction..
All four are a bit on the rough side…need special tools to smooth these down…

Like these. Where I can, I’ll use a bench plane, but the spokeshaves will do a lot of the work…..as soon as I can rig up a jig to hold them. Hate when the move around on me.
One of the other planks was almost knot free…the other? More of a Knot Farm…..one plank for a top, one plank to be resawn down to …...parts…

See how many knots you can find. Used a mitersaw to cut out the worst…

Yes, a cordless one. Sorted through the mess, to find a few for aprons..

And the rest will be for “Just-in-Case”......of a mis-cut….or need a bracket..

Will need a lot of bench plane work….to get things ready for joinery stuff. Plan is for this to be a Plant Stand….the planter is the size of a 5 gal. bucket!!....
Well, it is a start. Ever see that bin at Lowes, Home Depot, Menard’s that were full of cut-offs? basically that is what I have…without paying….already bought the entire board.

Tomorrow will be a hand plane day….then maybe get the joints done to connect the legs.
We’ll see how it goes…Stay tuned…
