The is a Trex deck with aluminum raisins and a drink cap also using Trex decking. The material is spiced rum which is a multi tone board giving a more convincing appearance of wood. The size of this deck is 8’x22’.

The highlight of this project that makes it worth sharing is the continuous hand rail onto the stairs. While planning this deck a searched all over for a picture of a detail similar to this. I could not find any image. I ended up talking to my reps rep who had no idea how to handle this detail. I ended up talking to someone above him in the chain of commands who was very familiar with the product.

I was disappointed to learn that the drink cap almost always ends prior to the stairs and switches back to a standard rail. He only knew of one other job where the material had been used on the stairs and was unsure if it was continues or if it ever turned out. Only that someone else sounded as thought they where going to attempt it.

All said and done it was not complicated at all. I am a sucker for continuity of details and would have been very disappointed if I had to switch rail details for the stairs.

Seeing it in picture should help anyone trying to do this. If anyone had more questions if trying to attempt this let me know. I would be happy to explain what all had to happen to do this. Like I said. Not very hard once you get going at it. I don’t come on here all the time so I will leave me email. Residentialservices@contractor.net.

Thanks for posting, it looks great. We are planning on re-doing our deck, and that is how my wife wants the rails to look as well. How did you terminate the TREX at the end of the stairs? Since the Trex is a wrapped material, is the base color showing at the end of the stair rails? I would appreciate it if you could take a close up picture of the ends of the Trex on the stairs.
Thanks,
Goose

Its just a straight cut. The inside color is perposfully very similar to the wrap so it doesnt stand out. I hant discovered any way to do a return or anything else to do it any cleaner. I do recomend a straight cut rather than flush. It makes it less visible both beacause of surface area and angle.
