I had some crepe myrtle sticks in the wood pile and decided to make a spoon with it. There were a few small knots in it but it worked out anyway. The wood was easy to work, and I finished it with sesame oil.

Like the spoon, and I’ve never worked with crepe myrtle – don’t usually see that tree around here. Sesame oil is an odd choice for finish though – doesn’t it smell really strongly of sesame now? Maybe it’s not as strong as I’m imagining. A teaspoon of that stuff in my stir-fry and I really know it’s in there! Most folks use mineral oil or flax seed (aka lindseed) oil.

I have a couple 5-6” straight crepe myrtle trunks drying. Reminds me of ash in miniature.

Good stuff.

Jeremymcon, my sesame oil isn’t strong at all so the spoon smells fine. Maybe it depends on the kind of oil that you use, but I suggest giving it a try. I use it because it is in my cabinet already and it doesn’t go rancid, so it seems like a good fit for spoons.
