My daughter is away at college and she asked me to make her a simple and small desk to fit in her room. She showed me a few pictures of things she liked, and this is what we came up with. I used Hickory for the top so she could write on it without making a mark it the top. That Hickory is hard stuff. The base is made from construction grade pine from the big box stores. I let it dry for a few months and then planed and jointed it to size. Used mortise and tenon in the corners and pocket holes for the angled pieces.

The chair was an estate sale find. It was very loose and scary to sit in so we got it for $4.50. I brought it home and disassembled it with a rubber mallet. There were a couple of broken tenons. I drilled out the tenon remains and then installed a new tenon by drilling the part with a forstner bit and gluing in a dowel. I sanded all the parts and then reassembled it using epoxy. Added a coat of paint and now she has a very solid chair that should last for years.

Simple but beautiful. Your daughter will love it.
