My passion for woodworking began as a result of my desire to personalize my “Man Cave” with some unique decor. Being a fan of “The Walking Dead,” I built a Zombie Emergency Box. I will eventually get around to posting that project. The construction is awful. As I said, it was my first project, and I had no clue about sanding or finishing.

This project is another piece of decor for my space. I love G.O.T. I’ve read the books and am also a fan of the series. I built a replica of Michonne’s katana from TWD for my wife, and it got me thinking about a sword for the cave.

I settled on Ice from G.O.T. (Pic 5), and also decided that I wanted to display it over a shield. I decided to attempt to recreate the direwolf sigil of the Starks. I am not much of an artist, but I think it came out decently well.

The sword is constructed from a 2×4 and is a 1/2” thick. I chamfered the edges to give the blade an edge. The pommel is made from walnut and stained with Minwax red mahogany. The circular ornamentation on the end is pine. The 3 separate parts of the sword are all joined with dowels. I painted the blade with a gray metallic acrylic. The gold is just spray paint. I finished with gloss spray varnish.

The shield is made from 1/2” pine plywood. I cut out the shape on my bandsaw. After sanding, I drew the direwolf in pencil and toyed with it until I was satisfied. The white and black are both acrylic. Again, I finished with spray varnish. I drilled holes for 2 dowels for the sword to rest on.

I am happy with the way it turned out. Thanks for looking!

You did a very nice job on this sword and shield. They both add up to a real eye catcher.

Thanks all. D.W. – the blade is Valyrian pine. Does that count?

Or godswood. That would be heretical if you kept to the old gods. Just remember. The doom came to the last valyrian smith.
