New to wood working but decided to bite the bullet and make some Christmas gifts this year to justify the cost of tools to my wife. A google search on wooden puzzles led me to this site and after a lot of lurking I came across some pretty good ideas. Wound up making GaryK’s melting block puzzle (thanks so much for the Sketchup file, it really helped) and KnotCurser’s diabolical dice puzzle. Figured I’d post the results instead of continuing to lurk, and say thank you for the great inspiration.

Melting Blocks:
- Birdseye maple and walnut box, curly maple top & bottom, purple heart blocks and a bubinga key piece and “inlay”
- Liked the idea of a lid as a validation method for correct solution. Picture is a little off but it fits perfectly (ie: no overhang ^_^ )
- Found out purple heart smells like feet. Pretty but still…feet smell.
- GaryK’s original project and sketchup file here:

Dice Puzzle:
- Bubinga blocks, birdseye maple base, and some maple dowels for the eyes.
- Fell in love with bubinga on this these projects, this in particular. Looking for excuses to use it more now.
- Original project from KnotCurser can be found here:

Looks great! What type of finish did you use on the maple and walnut?

Finish…that was my hardest thing of all. Went with Arm-r-seal semi-gloss after hearing it was idiot proof but apparently they didn’t account for the amount of idiocy I was bringing to the table. After multiple attempts I had great results ditching the foam brush and just using a folded over blue shop towel. Three to four coats and everything turned out stunning, not a drip or sag in sight.

Nicely done, and good job linking back to the originals.

All of these are nice pieces and will make great gifts. Congratulations and welcome to Lumberjocks.
