Bluetooth Birdseye Speakers

I’m a pretty lucky dad to have a great son and daughter, so this was their Christmas presents this year. No re-purposed wood for this one, just the good stuff….Birdseye Hard Maple. Sorry for the different lighting on the photos, had a bit of a time trying to capture the grain.

Also a few of the photos were done before all the elements were in place…..in other words, I added more features after I thought they were done.

Finish is many coats of blonde shellac and wet sanded with pumice and rottenstone, then wax.

The velcro loop on the back will hold either the power supply or the battery park. Also has a mini plug if you want to plug in directly. Added the volume control later, even though you don’t actually need it if using Bluetooth, but still nice.

The interior is lined in foam which is just friction fit in place.

Some build photos:

Pre-Testing:

MDF Front Panel:

Assembly:

It has a green power LED and a blue BLUETOOTH LED, but after it was all done, they were just way to obnoxiously bright, so fab’d some aluminnum/plexiglass/sharpie marker filters to put over the LEDS:

Here’s a parts list:

Dayton Audio KAB-230 2x30W Class D Audio Amplifier Board with Bluetooth 4.0

Dayton Audio KAB-FC Function Cables Package for Bluetooth Amplifier Boards

Dayton Audio KAB-LED Red/Green/Blue LED Package for Bluetooth Amplifier Boards

“HiVi B3N 3 Aluminum Driver Round Frame

“9V Battery Clip to DC Plug 2.1×5.5 mm Tip Positive 5 Adapter Cord

8 AA Cell Battery Holder

2.1mm Panel Mount DC Jack

“0.110 (16-14) Female Disconnect Crimp Terminal Blue 50 Pcs.

Fastronix SPST 20 Amp Heavy Duty Toggle Switch 3 Pack

Kastar AC Adapter, Power Supply 12V 6A 72W, Tip size 5.5*2.5mm

The old school power switch seems to go over well, and they sound pretty good. A little extra bass would be nice, but these are for the book-shelf. And it would be alot cheaper to just buy a speaker at WalMart, but that’s not the point!

Thanks for looking.

Looks great! Could the LED’s be excluded?

Thanks Monte!

Beams, sure could exclude, it now occurs to me that mounting them “under” the cabinet might make a cool effect.

Hey Gary! Thanks.

Very nice speaker build. Why did you choose AA batteries versus the rechargeable one that can work with that Bluetooth board?

Good question Redoak, at the time Parts Express was out of stock on the Lithium’s and decided that these probably won’t go portable very often, so went this way. I’ve had many second thoughts though….thanks.

Hey John! Appreciate it.

Very handsome speaker boxes, Jeff. Between you and Matt, y’all are giving me Bluetooth fever! Well done, my friend.

These are good looking speakers. The ones you buy at walmart would burn out in 6 months anyway, lol.

Nice job and thanks for all the links. Sometimes I find the hardest part of a build like this is knowing what parts I need and where to get them.

Dang Jeff…. you sure went to town on these. They look GREAT!

Hope they sound good.

I used 6.5” car stereo speakers for the ones I’ve done for my older girls and I have to say that there is some disadvantages to making them too big. I thought they would get used for tunes in their future dorm rooms, so I didn’t make any effort for them to be portable and simply put a wall wort in the cab. with a short extension cord sticking out the back. I think the decision about portability is one you have to make at the onset.

I like that yours are nice and small.
