This is my first clock – and it’s a gift for my Grandpa’s 95th birthday at the end of this month. Since he is most at fault for my woodworking addiction I wanted to make something meaningful for this milestone. The idea of a clock came to mind but I needed something to base it on that he would get a kick out of. Sooooo, I pulled the blade off my table saw and traced it on to a piece of Purpleheart. I cut it out using the drill press and bandsaw and then drilled the holes for the 4 numbers and counter sunk them with a forstner bit. I wanted something to represent the numbers that matched the brass clock parts I ordered from Rockler and I had some brass bolts on hand and figured they were about perfect.

I played around with extra little pieces of maple I had on hand and came up with the idea that the blade could look like it was cutting right in to that maple. Ok, actually I stared at all those extra pieces for about an hour before I had this huge revelation in my head! ;) I had the triangular pieces on hand and just cut the outer pieces down smaller to beef up the base. I routed a groove in to the middle piece of maple on the router table and after finishing the parts I glued the blade down in to the groove. I wanted to keep the pieces angular since that’s kinda what the table saw is good for! I chamfered the edges of the 3 pieces of maple on the router table and spent quite a bit of time sanding all those little cut outs on the purple heart blade.

I finished the purple heart with a few coats of Danish Oil and a couple coats of wax. I wanted to keep that maple clear so I finished it with General Finishes water based poly in semi-gloss. I love the way the brass looks against the purple heart and sure hope Grandpa does too!

Great job and it’s great that you can show him your appreciation for wood working and his part in it.
And as you’ve showed in your post half the fun of wood working is coming up with that something that makes it yours.

There is nothing like the feeling of making something for someone who has given you so much…especially when there is nothing they need or want for and you know you are giving something that will genuinely be appreciated anyways! I wish I could be there with you when he opens it, I expect it will be a priceless lifelong moment for you.

Thanks Jamie, you are absolutely right and I can’t wait to give it to him. I’m a sentimental sap in that way :)
