This is a Jefferson Writing desk. I got the idea, design, and plans from a magazine (Fine Woodworking). I made this for my daughter as a graduation present.

The material is Mohogany. the panels are plywood covered with homemade veneer. This was my first attempt at veneering and it went relatively painless. The hinges are tricky. The panels are 1/4 inch which means the screws for the hinges are super small and short. I ground them down to fit. One thing I would change is to offset the hinges from each other. The way this was, the screws only penetrate 1/8 inch which is too short in my book. I suspect my daughter will be bringing this home for minor repairs on the hinges.

All in all it was a fun project. If you want to make this, the plans are available. i suggest going to thier recommended hardware dealer for some of the hardware, especially the lock. Other off the shelf locks do not work with this design.

Nice job. I’ve done two of these over the years as my skills improved. Yours has turned out nicely. You are right about the screws and thinness of the boards; on my first I also had to file down the screws. But they held nonetheless. I like how you’ve kept it “clean” and simple. TJ would have approved.
