This is my first banjolele (or banjo-uke) build. It’s made of Sapele and Banana wood. The banana wood finished with such a nice amber color I had to go back and get the brass hardware. It has an 8 inch diameter head, and a 17 inch scale length (same as a tenor uke). I will be posting another banjolele in the very near future which has a 10 inch head. I’ve tried a couple other methods for building the rings, but this one worked out so well I will probably stick with it. Each ring has twelve wedges cut at 15 degrees. The saw is accurate, but smoothing up the ends of each piece with the disk sander makes for a very tight joint. In addition to being very easy, rolling up the glued segments on the tape eliminates the need for multiple jigs, and speeds up the work sequence.

Very pretty. I’m interested in how it sounds, too!

This looks like a lot of creative fun. You did a nice job on this small banjo. Congratulations.

Thanks for your comments. Now that the head has been tightened a few times it sounds very good… of course a good banjo sound doesn’t always endear one to others. But I’m enjoying it none the less. The banjolele is louder and has a brighter sound than the standard uke.

That came out great. I really like the segmented pot, it’s very attractive and interesting.
