Cutting board gift

Made this edge grain cutting board as a gift for a friend a while back. I used walnut and maple and finished with Howard’s Cutting Board Oil. Edge grain is much easier than end-grain as I was able to put the board back through the planer!

Biggest plus to a face grain board is if your stock has some curlies, they will be right there. Not to mention it is a standard glue up, and yep, you sure can safely use the planer. Nice board.

My understanding is end grain boards are easier on the cutlery. I’m not certain how that is figured? All knives need to be sharpened anyhow.

Lovely board and a classic wood pairing

I’m no expert but, as I’ve come to understand it, the blade edge will separate the fibers instead of coming across them. That makes sense to me but it feels like a choice between the blade and the board- one has to end up on the losing end

Looks fantastic BB! The thickness is perfect, thinner boards tend to distort.

End grain is as avsmusic1 says, flat grain will show knife marks quickly, but they are so much easier to make 8^)
