In the center of this carving are nine birds (blue, black, red) that fit together. Suspended on wires around the center are three birds like those in the center. This design is a small piece of Escher’s “Metamorphose III” (1967-8) in which shapes morph from one form to another over a design that is 11 feet long.

Basswood wall decoration, 13” x 19” overall, painted with acrylics

Well done Phil. A few years ago I read a little about how these interlocking parts are created, but I must admit that what little I learned is already long forgotten. You on the other hand have put it into practice in a very nice way.

Stefang – This is not like intarsia. The central part with nine birds is one piece of wood. It is still challenging to lay out because anything you “shave off” of one figure is added to the adjoining figure. Fortunately I had Escher’s original to help me.
