This is another relief carving based on a graphic design of M. C. Escher. The original was titled “Sun & Moon” and was a woodcut printed in four colors. It was called that because the light birds were overprinted with a sun, and the dark birds had a crescent moon & stars. That was a little too busy for this relief, so I limited it to the birds.

The birds form a tessellation, a design in which figures fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces. This one is unusual in that the bird shapes do not repeat – each is unique. Basswood, 16” x 15” – stained (dark birds), clear finish.

Very well done. I’m sure that Escher would be pleased to see that his art is still being appreciated. ;)

Nice! Leaving the sun and moon parts (and what appears to be Saturn) off was a good choice.

Mindblowing…it would be a nightmare just to draw it.
