I’ve had the R4512 for a little over 2 years. It has served it’s purpose without wowing me. The fence has always been an issue. After 2 years of monkeying around with the alignment and settling for less than perfect. I accidentally found out that the fence rail is TWISTED. Now I know not to mess around with alignment anymore. I planned on building my own Biesemeyer fence so it’s not that big of a deal right now. Now, on to the biggest, dangerous item. I was using my R4512 to ...

Awesome tool for repetitive M&T Joints

Awesome tool for repetitive M&T Joints

06-13-2018 08:45 PM by MC | 3 comments »

I made the decision to purchase Leigh’s Pro FMT when I took a commission to build a large cabinet with over 200 mortise and tenon joints most of which were near identical. The tool is easy to put together and the instruction manual is very clear. There is some set up time involved with each change in configuration and for me a change in thought process. I am used to first cutting the mortise laying out the joint measuring from the edge. For the tenons I have always used a marking ga...

6-day 'Practical woodworking' course

6-day 'Practical woodworking' course

06-12-2018 01:29 PM by Charliefreak | 2 comments »

I just finished the 6-day “Practical woodworking” course offered by JD Lohr School of Woodworking, located in Schwenksville, PA (about an hour from Philadelphia), and I wanted to share my thoughts on this exceptionally well-designed and delivered course. The course is designed to introduce the basic principles of furniture making, from rough lumber through to a finished piece of furniture. The process is scaffolded with a hall table project, but this is more of a means to an end. The meat ...

Rohm 871053 Type 136 Supra 13 Keyless Drill Chuck

Rohm 871053 Type 136 Supra 13 Keyless Drill Chuck

I have a WEN drill press, that came with a Chinese no-brand chuck. The chuck was wobbling and I had enough run-out that it would shake the whole work piece and vibrate like nobody’s business. I knew this could be a possibility with the DP I bought, but that’s another topic; I’m reviewing the chuck not the DP. (I really like the DP now that I have a good chuck, in case you were wondering) This chuck is about 1/2” capacity (It’s Geman, so it’s all Metric)....

It's Daylight in My Shop

It's Daylight in My Shop

I’m getting close to finishing up my new shop setup outside Atlanta. On the “Deals” thread on LJ I saw that these Feit lights were on sale at Costco. Online they’re $40/2 pack. Locally they were selling for $20/each. My first clue that somethign was up was when 2 different complete strangers, upon seeing them in my cart, told me what great lights they are! I linked them together in my garage (5 of them—1 more is installed separately). I plugged them into a ...

Craftsman Hardware

Craftsman Hardware

CraftsmanHardware.com is a Customer Service Hero. Far too many times I’ve ordered items USPS priority or next day air only to have the order languish for several days before even getting processed for shipment, thereby completely negating my costly efforts to get said item at my doorstep in a timely manner. I ordered some Mission style cabinet door pulls from this outfit last Wednesday. Imagine my surprise when they showed up in my mailbox on Friday. These folks got my order out t...

Kreg Bandsaw Fence is a Keeper

Kreg Bandsaw Fence is a Keeper

05-29-2018 11:15 AM by pintodeluxe | 15 comments »

This Kreg fence was chosen as replacement for the factory fence on my early 90’s Jet bandsaw. The old Jet fence had tubular front and rear rails, and was cumbersome to lock into place. You actually had to tighten two separate knobs. My other complaint was the Jet fence rails stuck out several inches to the right, and I was always backing into them and jabbing my ribs. So out with the Jet, and in with the Kreg. The really great thing about the Kreg fence is that it’s located within the foot...

Laguna 14BX 220V Bandsaw 4.5 Stars

Laguna 14BX 220V Bandsaw 4.5 Stars

OverviewI’ve had my Laguna 14bx for about 8 months now – purchased used but in very good condition to replace my Delta 14” saw with riser. This unibody style saw was a huge upgrade from the underpowered, undertensioned Delta. My main uses are for resaw, milling logs, and general shop rough cuts. I do not do any cutting of tight curves with this, so don’t expect me to talk about the time I cut 300 wooden nickels as I have not done anything of the sort. I purchased th...

Amazing battery life and power in lightweight Lithium Ion brushless kit

Amazing battery life and power in lightweight Lithium Ion brushless kit

05-21-2018 04:11 PM by CyberDyneSystems | 13 comments »

I picked up the DEWALT DCK277C2 20V MAX Compact Brushless Drill and Impact Combo Kit on sale at Lowe’s last week. For a little over $150.00 I got two of the latest brushless tools, a charger and two battery packs. Considering this was right next to a $99.00 driver only that was not the new Brushless, it felt like Christmas. We have been using Milwaukee’s M12 in the shop for several years now under very hard use, and have been very impressed with those kits. They are apparently ...

IBC chisels

IBC chisels

05-21-2018 03:20 PM by Cocosquatch | 24 comments »

Hi All, As all my bench chisels have side angles less than 90 degrees, that go all the way to the back of the chisels, not long ago I have decided to look around for some chisels with 90 degrees sides to the backs of the chisels. I remember that a while back IBC was looking into making chisels and because I already had two IBC plane blades in use for a long time now, so I’ve decided to look at their chisels. When looking for more information about these new chisels over the internet, ...
