Neighbor has a friend of a friend with several 100 BF of this wood which was salvaged from the ceilings of boats in the Mid-Atlantic Chesapeake area. It’s a hard wood, does not dent easily with a thumbnail, no noticeable smell when planed or sanded, one end cut with a poor blade burnt just like cherry. carves like butter with a sharp chisel, I’m stuck between a cherry or a mahogany, it’s very close to some of the locally harvested cherry I’ve got in the shop. So here’s the pics, salvage so no bark or leaves available

I just looked at some samples of Chesapeake Alder. That’s some pretty wood, that is.

All humor aside, I think the Alder species can be ruled out.
