My old Black and Decker 3×21 belt sander made a horrible noise today while using it to debur some aluminum I cut. Figured it was probably toast, its at least 10 years old and owes me nothing, but figured id pull it apart and see whats what anyway. Both shields on one of the bearings were trashed. Was a 608 and I have a handful of them and figured “I can fix this.” Everything went back together smoothly and seemed to run normal.

I went back to working on my pile of aluminum and after 5 min or so it started adjusting speed up and down. Being almost done what I was working on and lacking in brains, I kept at it. Got a whiff of that burn electrical smell and then bright blue sparks were impressively flying outside the vents. Time to set the days without a fire sign back down to 0.

Seems like most manufacturers are preferring the 3×18 belt sanders now, but I have a pile of belts from this old one. The Harbor Freight belt sander looks to me like it came out of the same mold as my B&D so I will be trying out one of those and see if I get any decent use out of it.

Black and Decker are famous for making Smoke Genies. Beat that HF up for your first 30 days. No quibble warranty is great if you can get it to fault in a short time. Usually if they don’t burn up quickly, they are good for a ride.

Best of luck.

Well that sucks!! Have a Craftsman myself that seems to live forever, about 20 years old. So I have not priced out sanders in a long time.

HF is your friend at $33 but for $163 this could be yours:
